Bivvy Bags Are Lightweight And Flexible

by Steve Thibeault
There was a time when a bivvy referred to a military encampment, usually without too much protection or shelter. This camp was composed of a ramshackle collection of tents or makeshift shelters. Today, the bivvy bag has evolved into a solo or ultralight camping adventure accessory. Its function is to keep the user dry and warm by protecting a sleeping bag and it can help to raise the body temperature by up to 10 degrees.
A bivvy bag is very compact, can be folded into a small space and weighs very little. Hence it is ideal for someone who is planning a trip into the wilderness, wants to go backpacking, long-distance biking or an extended foray into the backcountry.

The bivvy bag, or bivvy sack may be quite simple but it is still quite sophisticated. Originally, this item was designed to be little more than a simple shelter made out of a modified sleeping bag, but state-of-the-art materials are used today. Early items did suffer from considerable condensation, as being composed of a single layer of waterproof fabric they were very poorly ventilated.

To enable the product to stand up well in poor conditions, today’s bivvy bag is composed of polyethylene, together with a breathable material such as Gore-tex and a water repellent. 90% of your body heat will be reflected back to you and the item is very durable and lightweight for portability.

Bivvy tents may be ideal for you if you are claustrophobic. These modified items expand into a full enclosure with additional breathing room. Mesh panels line the sides and poles can help to lift the fabric up.

One of the advantages of the bivvy bag is that it can be used in any emergency situation and is an essential element of a personal survival kit. Many people choose to have these items in their home, as you never know when an unforeseen occurrence could force you out.

Don’t underestimate the impact that a heavy backpack can have when you are traveling. Bivvy bags are ideal, especially if you are traveling alone and they weigh a lot less than a regular tent.

When considering the purchase of a bivvy bag, look for quality of construction. The product should come with a stuff sack, integrated sleeping pads and straps for securing the bag in place. Make sure that you are happy with this kind of a sleeping arrangement before you set out on your trip, as many do find the idea restrictive, whilst others are overjoyed by its flexibility and lightweight.
